Tribe Not Giving Up on Ohio Casino
OHIO – As reported by the Independent: "The Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma has not called off their bet to place a resort-style casino in Massillon, according to a tribe representative, even though Canal Fulton is now entertaining an agreement with the tribe.
"'We haven't decided it's Canal Fulton and we haven't decided it's not Massillon,' Terry Casey said Wednesday. 'There has been a lot of support in Massillon as far as council members and others in the community.'
"…Massillon City Council backed away from signing an intergovernmental agreement with the tribe last month, requesting more time to review the proposal. City Council signed a letter of interest instead, which the tribe has used in its land-claim lawsuit, which names several municipalities in the state.
"A federal judge granted the tribe a 30-day extension in its lawsuit on Wednesday.
"Though the tribe is not specifically seeking land in Massillon, it has been said the city could become part of a settlement agreement in the land-claim suit. Now, Casey said, it could be Canal Fulton negotiating such a settlement.
"…Massillon City Councilman Paul Manson said he doesn't believe it signals an end to talks for a casino in Massillon…"
