BOOKIES WELCOME FOOTBALLER BETS BAN - Friday 12th of August 2005

BOOKMAKERS last night welcomed moves to clamp down on betting scandals in Scottish football.

Scottish Football League secretary Peter Donald has written to every club reminding them that betting on matches in which the players are involved is banned.

The move follows a string of exposŽs by the Sunday Mail of suspicious betting.

A spokesman for Ladbrokes said: It is our policy not to take bets knowingly from footballers. We welcome anything that backs up our stance.

Last season, we revealed that £250,000 was gambled on a meaningless end-of-season game between Queens Park and Elgin City.

Despite warnings, bookies were stung for £200,000.

Both clubs were cleared by a League investigation.

And in the season before, £250,000 was staked on Ayr United to win an end-of-season match with Raith Rovers.

One bet of £800 was placed on an internet account held in the name of the son of Raith director Willie Gray.

But a SFL investigation found that the club had done nothing wrong
