Fawu workers on strike at Emperor’s Palace - Friday 12th of August 2005

ABOUT 900 Food and Allied Workers Union members were on strike at Johannesburg’s Emperor’s Palace casino complex today,Fawu said.

General secretary Katishi Masemola said the strike and pickets were in support of above-inflation wage increases.

Workers were seeking monetary increases, not percentage increases, and these translated to roughly 8% for the highest paid and 17% for the lowest paid workers.

The company’s offers ranged from 6,5% for the highest paid to 10% for the lowest paid workers.

"Workers felt that they deserved more than the company offered," he said.

Members felt that the company had made good profits over the last few years and could afford the increases.

"They have made handsome, windfall profits because of the growth of the industry as an attractive investment," he said.

About 95% of the 1200 workers in that region’s bargaining unit were on strike. They performed a range of duties from catering to skilled artisans.

Another round of discussions with management was planned.

"We would guide workers to be open to further discussions and hopefully the company would make one or two courtesy moves," Masemola said.

He was scheduled to address the strikers at about 1:30pm.
