Winnipeg reserve to open smoker-friendly casino - Friday 12th of August 2005

After almost a year of planning, the Roseau River First Nation is set to open a gambling house that will be a haven for smokers.

The reserve is taking advantage of the fact that Manitobas anti-smoking law -- which forbids people from lighting up in bars, restaurants and other public places -- does not apply to aboriginal reserves. The government has said that is because the reserves fall under federal jurisdiction.

The $1-million centre will offer bingo halls and 20 video-lottery terminals when it opens tomorrow.

The band is also planning bus rides for residents of Winnipeg, 70 kilometres to the north, who want to smoke while they gamble.
