36K WINNER TOLD: YOU CAN'T HAVE CASH - Saturday 12th of March 2005

Celebrations over Welsh rugby success have turned sour for Gwendraeth Valley workmates whose bookies have refused to pay out winnings of more than 36,000. Alan Jones and a pal put down an accumulative 49 bet for Wales to take Triple Crown, Grand Slam and Six Nations Championship glory at a Jack Brown bookmakers in Ammanford.

But the betting shop now say Alan's type of bet doesn't apply to competitions like the Six Nations and that it should never have been taken. They won't pay out.

Alan, a 58-year-old telephone engineer from Capel Hendre, said: "I told the guy working at the bookies that I wanted to bet on Wales to do the lot and he showed me how to do it.

"I was thinking we'd win about ??6,000, but it actually worked out to ??36,029 - I couldn't believe it.

"I went in on Sunday to make arrangements for payment but they said they weren't going to be paying out.

"If they took on the bet they should honour it. They offered us ??1,000 but I'm not interested. It's scandalous."

A spokesman for Jack Brown said: "You just can't do the bet and I can't explain how it was taken. I can only apologise for our staff being daft enough to take it. We're prepared to pay, in good faith, ??357 for a Grand Slam bet."
