It's D-Day for the Gambling Bill - Saturday 12th of March 2005

A Lord's committee will be discussing the Bill this afternoon. Later in the evening the media will be examining the proposed amendments, which could be many and varied, and giving their opinion on the likelihood of the Bill returning to the Commons or being shelved by the Government in the run up to a General Election.

Over the last few weeks there has been intensive public campaigning by the British Casino Association as well as the Salvation Army, Methodist Church and Children's charity NCH. Behind closed doors one can imagine that there has been equally as much horse trading going on.

The sticking points mainly centre on slots.

British casino operators are upset that overseas companies may have been potentially handed an unfair advantage and they are being discriminated against. The SA, MC & NCH are concerned that children will still be able to gamble on Class D machines under the current terms of the Bill. This anomaly allowing children to gamble presently makes Britain unique in the developed world.

One notes that the Bookmakers have been remarkably silent during the last few weeks. Could this be perhaps because their lucrative FOBT's may also be on the line ?

Perhaps what is really needed in Britain is a dedicated slots Bill ?
