New York-New York Boss Receives Trumpet Award - Monday 6th of February 2006

LAS VEGAS, Nevada The first and only black president of a Strip hotel-casino has been honored with a Trumpet Award, joining other 2006 honorees including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, singers Stevie Wonder and Usher, and actress Vivica A. Fox.

Lorenzo Creighton, who became president of New York-New York in April, was recognized for business achievement by Trumpet, which honors black people's accomplishments in diverse fields. Creighton will receive his award at a ceremony Jan. 23 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

"It is an honor and a privilege to be counted among the luminaries who comprise the Trumpet Awards' list of achievers," Creighton said. "This award is a nod to the growing presence of African Americans in the gaming industry."

Before joining New York-New York, Creighton had been president of Flamingo since 2002. He also held executive positions with casinos in Natchez, Miss., St. Louis and New Orleans during his 16 years in the gaming industry.

Creighton has also worked as a high school teacher, attorney, judge and gaming regulator.

"I've had several careers," Creighton said, "Each prepared me for the opportunity that I enjoy today. I love the competition of gaming and the marketing of it. You have to come up with creative ideas to keep the operations going and growing."

MGM Mirage Chairman Terry Lanni said Creighton deserves the honor.

"He is a natural leader whose interpersonal communication style does not demand respect, rather, his mere presence commands respect," Lanni said.
