Mississippi Infrastructure Proposal Dropped - Saturday 21st of January 2006

MISSISSIPPI – As reported by the Clarion Ledger: "The Mississippi Gaming Commission has dropped a proposal that would let casinos count roads and sewerage systems to meet infrastructure requirements.

"Larry Gregory, executive director of the Gaming Commission, told the House Gaming and Tourism Committees on Wednesday that he and Gaming Commission Chairman Jerry St. Pe of Pascagoula proposed broadening the infrastructure regulation as a way to offer casinos flexibility in rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina.

"…A casino developer currently is required to match what he spends on a casino with land-based nongaming developments such as a hotel or golf course, but money spent on parking lots, roads and sewerage systems doesn't count.

"…The gaming industry feared a change to allow roads, sewerage systems and "any other such facility as approved by the commission as infrastructure" would spur development of small casinos instead of large resorts…"
