Oregon Casino Study Touts Jobs, Revenue - Monday 23rd of January 2006

Backers of a proposed casino in Wood Village are promoting a new study that says the facility would generate as many as 8,000 jobs and nearly $200 million in revenue for the state, but it was quickly attacked Thursday by critics for failing to account for the impact on the Oregon Lottery and other entertainment businesses.

"The economic study was aimed at increasing support for the casino proposal that two Lake Oswego entrepreneurs want to put before Oregon voters this November.

"The casino, which would be located at the now-closed greyhound track in East Multnomah County, could gross between $472 million and $787 million in annual gambling revenue, according to the study commissioned by the Oregon Gaming & Entertainment Company. The study said the key variable is whether the Cowlitz Indian Tribe is successful in siting a casino in La Center, Wash., just 16 miles north of Portland.

"The firm's principals, Bruce Studer and Matthew Rossman, have filed two ballot measures that would let them open the state's only nontribal casino. They propose giving 25 percent of their gambling revenues to state government.

"The study says the 25 percent cut would produce nearly $197 million in annual revenue for the state, without competition from the Cowlitz casino. With that casino, revenue to the state would drop to about $118 million a year…"
