Penguins Unconcerned About Betting Scandal - Friday 10th of February 2006

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Penguins president Ken Sawyer said the franchise was unconcerned that an illegal sports bookmaking operation implicating former Penguins winger Rick Tocchet would adversely affect the organization's plans for a new arena primarily financed by Isle of Capri Casinos.

"…Tocchet, 41, played for the Penguins from 1992-94 and was a member of the Pens' 1991-92 Stanley Cup championship team.

"He has been charged with promoting gambling, money laundering and conspiracy.

"New Jersey State Police concluded that a multi-million dollar enterprise involving Tocchet processed more than 1,000 wagers exceeding $1.7 million over a 40-day period. Many of the gambling ring's clientele included past and professional athletes and celebrities, who are being interviewed as part of an ongoing investigation, according to the New Jersey State Police.

"The Penguins maintain that securing their long-term future in Pittsburgh is incumbent upon Isle of Capri being awarded a slots license…"
