Anti-Casino Group Criticizes Union Agreement - Wednesday 22nd of February 2006

PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Pennsylvania Evening Sun: "Another battle has emerged from the casino controversy - whether local workers will be used in the construction of the proposed $300-million facility in Straban Township.

"A union group announced recently casino investors have agreed to use union labor for the construction, a decision local opposition group No Casino Gettysburg is criticizing.

"Chance Enterprises CEO David LeVan, a native of Gettysburg, confirmed recently the agreement was reached in December.

"…But No Casino Gettysburg is saying the deal will shut out local workers and prevent Adams County from reaping the economic benefits of the large-scale project, an accusation Chance and the unions deny.

"…, Hank Butler, the director of government affairs for the Associated Building Contractors in Pennsylvania, spoke at a public No Casino meeting in Gettysburg said the union agreement will likely prevent many local contractors from bidding.

"…But Joe Wingert, organizer of the Central Pennsylvania Building and Construction Trades Council, said Butler is wrong about the amount of union labor in the area.

"He said there are more than 4,000 union members in Adams County, though that number includes Teamster members who could belong to non-construction trades like police, firefighting or truck driving…"
