Schwarzenegger Plan Blocked - Tuesday 12th of April 2005

The Schwarzenegger administration's bid to bolster the state gambling commission with a major staffing increase was blocked yesterday by an Assembly committee.

"The $2.25 million request for an additional 23 employees was rejected by a budget subcommittee that raised pointed questions about a new slot-machine testing lab and most of the new positions sought.

"???Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger already has cut the commission's expansion plan nearly in half, from $4.8 million and 45 new positions. But that hasn't satisfied lawmakers aligned with the state's powerful gambling tribes.

"Twenty-three employees might not mean much to bigger state agencies, but they represent a 50 percent expansion for the commission, which oversees 55 Indian casinos and 100 card clubs???"
