Final Push to Finish Borgata Expansion - Thursday 11th of May 2006

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Greg Goble looked dead tired.

"…'It's only 12:30. I can rest for another minute before I have to go back to work,' Goble said of the precious waning moments of his lunch break.

"Co-workers Larry Thoms, Kenny Andaloro and Robert Mai nodded in agreement. They savored their lunchtime during a recent sunny day, but would soon head back inside to resume a grinding schedule.

"It's all part of being a construction worker at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, where the final push is on to get a $200 million expansion project ready for its June 30 grand opening.

"Ten hours per day, six days per week, with a measly half-hour break for lunch. The hours seem interminable, the body takes a pounding and the home life suffers. But the pay is great.

"…About 400 workers from trade unions throughout southern New Jersey are building Borgata's casino expansion and three new trendy restaurants operated by celebrity chefs Wolfgang Puck, Bobby Flay and Michael Mina.

"…William Pauls, president of the South Jersey Building Trades Council, an umbrella group representing 30,000 workers and 19 unions, said the taxing hours and physical demands of the Borgata project are nothing new. In the past, other casino projects have required a work schedule of 14 hours a day, seven days a week.

"…Borgata's project has been keeping construction workers busy in Atlantic City, along with a $550 million expansion at Harrah's opening next year and the $175 million Pier at Caesars retail and entertainment complex that will debut this summer on the Boardwalk…"
