Poly to offer casino courses - Monday 23rd of January 2006

The integrated resorts are set to open only in 2009 but Ngee Ann Polytechnic will start new courses soon on resort management to help its students land some of the 35,000 jobs likely to be generated. In November, final-year business students will have the option of taking up courses that will cover topics such as running resort facilities, security in casinos and managing resort customers and employees. The new courses to be offered initially to 40 students will in time be expanded to take in 100 to 150 students. Over at the engineering faculty, a course on facilities management will have its present focus expanded from commercial buildings to include resorts.

GAME FOR IT: Ngee Ann Polytechnic is to start new courses on resort management including the finer points of being a croupier. The polytechnic is also considering introducing a diploma in resort management. Its deputy principal Tan Hang Cheong said a team started work on the new modules early this year. On April 18, the government announced its decision to have two integrated resorts with casinos up and running by 2009. They are projected to create 35,000 new jobs and provide a S$1.5bil (RM3.5bil) boost to the economy annually. A check with the three universities and four other polytechnics here found that most see no need for new casino-related courses for now.
