More details on NEC casino scheme - Wednesday 10th of September 2008

The NEC in the West Midlands has announced more details about plans for a leisure and entertainment complex which would cost at least 90m.

The facility, which it is hoped will be built in time to open in 2012, would be known as Resorts World At The NEC.

A casino, conference facilities, bars, restaurants, a hotel and a spa have all been proposed for the NEC site.

The development is dependent on the project winning the backing of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council.

The NEC said the initiative would create about 1,000 jobs.

Compete with venues

The NEC Group has joined together with casino operator Genting Stanley (Solihull) Ltd for the scheme.

The casino would take up less than 10% of the floor area of the resort, the NEC said.

Genting Stanley was chosen as The NEC Groups preferred partner after a "rigorous tender process" lasting a year, the NEC said.

The NEC Groups chief executive, Paul Thandi, said the complex would "allow us to compete with venues across the world offering a genuine destination experience".

Executive deputy chairman for Genting Stanley, Peter Brooks, said the organisation was looking forward "to bringing this further major investment in the UK and its wealth of experience and success to this venture"
