Wayne Rooney loses £65,000 in two hours gambling - Saturday 1st of November 2008
EXCLUSIVE Wayne gambling at 4am after big England game
Wayne Rooney lost an astonishing £65,000 in just two hours after hitting a casino at four in the morning.
The soccer hero went on the betting spree after flying home from scoring twice for England in the World Cup qualifier in Belarus.
Rooney, 23, jetted back with his team-mates after the 3-1 win and went straight to the members-only club in Manchester to play blackjack and roulette at £500 a go.
His losing streak only ended when the club closed at 6am.
Wife Coleen, 22, was in London at the time, filming her TV show Coleens Real Women and is thought to be unaware of her husbands losses.
A source at 235 Casino, where the £80,000-a-week Manchester United striker has won big in the past, said: "People did a double-take when he walked in.
"The game against Belarus had been on the clubs big screens just a few hours earlier and yet here he was back in Manchester.
"When Wayne walked in a few people congratulated him on how well he had played. He went straight to a blackjack table and started to play hands at the maximum £500 a time. He was happy to chat to people and he had a permanent smile on his face.
"It looked like he was thinking, My lucks in tonight - Ill keep it going and make a mint.
"But he was quickly into a serious losing streak. At first he was joking with the dealer that he must have stepped in some dog dirt on his way in.
"But when he kept losing, the mood at the table changed. Normally, dealers are totally detached from punters but this was Wayne Rooney and he was losing tens of thousands.
"He switched to roulette and put hundreds of pounds on each spin of the wheel to try and recoup some of his losses. But his luck didnt change."
The source added: "The club closed at 6am and he was £65,000 down. The dealer was mortified, but everyone who gambles knows the risks and Wayne Rooney is no different.
"When he left, he had a face like thunder. But at least he can afford to lose that sort of money."
Rooney had flown out of Belaruss capital Minsk with the rest of the England team just after midnight on October 15.
Their chartered FA jet landed at Manchester Airport just before 3am to drop off Rooney and the other Northern-based players.
But instead of driving 10 miles to his Cheshire mansion Rooney went to the city centre casino.
In November last year, Manchester United stars went on a £250,000 gambling spree at the same casino to celebrate Rio Ferdinands birthday.
And two years ago the Sunday Mirror revealed how Rooney ran up debts of £700,000 in a secret England team dressing room gambling ring.
