Gambling commissioners to award new casino licenses - Thursday 12th of May 2005

The gambling wait is almost over.This week, state regulators will decide how many new casino licenses will be approved.Ten proposals are on the table. Last week, a majority of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission decided to approve as many as five new license.

They'll make their final choices on Wednesday.Some key considerations include economic development, tourism potential and the potential to contribute to the state's economy.Iowa has 13 state-licensed casinos. The state brought in nearly 225 (m) million dollars last year from taxes and fees on those casinos.The smallest of the proposed casinos will pay the state under ten (m) million dollars, while the largest projects could generate as much as 40 (m) million dollars a year.
