Bet365 challenges Betfair as Oddschecker top bookie - Tuesday 16th of June 2009

Bet365 looks set to take Betfair’s place as the leading bookmaker on Oddschecker, a ranking of the odds comparison site’s top 10 bookmakers in May seen by eGaming Review exclusively reveals.

The ranking, seen exclusively by EGRmagazine.com, shows Bet365 having experienced a steady rise in market share over the last 13 months as Betfair experienced a steady decline.

In April last year Betfair held 17% of Oddschecker bookie clicks, but has lost share every month to reach only 14.5% in May.

Bet365, by contrast, held just 10.5% in April last year, but has gained market share every month since and held 13.6% in May. This leaves a margin of just 0.9% between the site’s two leading bookies.

The May figures also show that Stan James is now Oddschecker’s fourth most popular bookmaker, blasting past rivals Ladbrokes and Paddy Power.

Stan James has overtaken the two rivals, which as reported on EGRmagazine.com last month, were the site’s joint third most popular bookies in the 12 months ending at the end of April, with 9% of overall Oddschecker traffic (more).

Stan James’ rise results in part from it having from February incorporated liquidity from Bet Direct, the betting site it acquired from 32 Red in September 2007 (more). Its share for February was 8.6%, up from 6.9% the month before, rose to 8.9% in March, and to 10.3% in April.

However its third place ranking in May was despite a slight fall in market share that month to 9.8%, and reflects sustained losses by competitors such as Betfair as well as Ladbrokes, which held 11.7% at its high point in the period on September last year but held just 7.2% in May.

May’s top 10 Oddschecker sites

1. Betfair: 14.53%

3. William Hill: 10.03%

4. Stan James: 9.78%

6. Ladbrokes: 7.23%

7. Skybet: 5.05%

8. Sportingbet: 4.67%
