Sugarhouse Casino hearing set - Wednesday 17th of June 2009

The proposed Sugarhouse Casino will have a public hearing before the Philadelphia City Planning Commission on June 24.

Under city zoning regulations, the casino needs planning commission approval to start construction. The commission is composed of nine members appointed by Mayor Michael Nutter, who has expressed his backing for the plan.

Sugarhouse is proposed for 23 acres on the Delaware River in the Fishtown neighborhood. The first phase calls for 3,000 slot machines, parking and a riverfront promenade. A second phase will include restaurants, hotel and other entertainment.

The public meeting will be held at 1 p.m. at the Academy of Natural Sciences, 1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia.

A second casino proposed for Philadelphia, the Foxwoods, received City Council approval Thursday to move into the former Strawbridge’s at 8th and Market streets. That proposal must also go through the planning commission.
