Betfair considers Hobart base - Thursday 12th of May 2005

It is understood the British betting agency Betfair has started looking for office space in Hobart, with a view to establishing a second global base. But there is still no word from the State Government on whether the betting exchange will be granted a licence.

Sources have told the ABC the former home of the Antarctic Adventure in Salamanca Place is one of the sites Betfair has looked at. The betting agency's interest in real estate suggests it is confident about the chances of being granted a licence from the Tasmanian Government. Betfair's managing director Mark Davies says he is hopeful. "Only the Government can answer that point [but] I think that there's every chance that they will," he said. "I'm waiting, like you are, for the Premier to make that announcement." Premier Paul Lennon has said he will make his decision known in the next few weeks.
