The mystery gamblers with a carrier full of cash - Tuesday 28th of July 2009

TWO mystery gamblers turned up at Sheffields greyhound racing track with nearly £47,000 in a carrier bag - in an attempt to claim the biggest jackpot in the history of English greyhound racing.

It took shocked staff an hour to count the money, which was lined up to cover every possible permutation of the tracks Jackpot 6, in which punters have to guess the correct winner in six consecutive races.

The jackpot had not been claimed in months, and had steadily built up to more than £140,000 - the biggest prize in English dog racing history.

Owlerton Stadium managing director John Gilburn said: "The couple arrived at the track before racing saying they wanted to play all the permutations on the jackpot and produced a carrier bag stuffed full of money.

"We took them into the cash office and it took us an hour to complete the count!"

After betting on every possible outcome, the mystery couple were certain to claim the pot - until they discovered two other punters had correctly guessed the winning dogs.

"There were two other winners, one of whom was a local businessman but who wishes to remain anonymous," Mr Gilburn said.

"The third winner was a regular jackpot punter on both the greyhounds and the horses who had placed his bet online."

The couple with the carrier bag won £34,000 - which meant overall they lost almost £13,000.
