Governor reaches casino deals with two tribes - Sunday 12th of June 2005

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced agreements Thursday to allow two of California's largest Indian tribes to build casinos, deals that are expected to generate about $7 million a year for the state.

The 4,000-member Yurok tribe in Del Norte County can build a casino with 350 slot machines and must share up to 25 percent of its winnings with the state. The amount will increase as overall winnings grow.

The Quechan tribe of Imperial County amended an existing compact with the state to allow a casino with 1,100 slot machines. The 3,000-member tribe also will share up to 25 percent of its winnings on the same sliding scale.

Administration officials said the agreements require approval from the Legislature and federal regulators.

Aides to the governor said the tribes also have agreed to address concerns related to a host of issues, including traffic, fire protection and working conditions.
