Gambling study welcome but 'very limited' - Sunday 12th of June 2005

Welfare provider Anglicare has criticised the scope of a new study into the impact of gambling in Tasmania.

The State Government says four companies have submitted tenders to conduct the three month "Prevalence of Gambling" study, which will follow up research done in 1994, 1996 and 2000.

Anglicare says it is pleased the Government is undertaking some research but has described it as "very limited" and called for a thorough economic and social impact study.

Anglicare's Chris Jones says public pressure is needed to convey the level of community concern.

"What we're hoping we can generate in the community is a concern that people will be able to express to their local parliamentarians," he said.

"And [they will] say, 'We want something done because we see the costs, we see our neighbours, we see our friends and family suffering and we want something done.'

"That's what we're really agitating for."
