Cards that won teen ??183,000 - Saturday 12th of March 2005

IT???S the dream of every novice gambler: walk into a casino for the first time, slap down a ??1 bet and walk out with a whopping great win.

And that???s exactly what happened to one lucky 18-year-old who walked away with ??183,000 from the Reading Sporting Club after being dealt a royal flush of a 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace of diamonds.

The odds on being dealt the hand is a staggering 649,740 to 1.

It was the first time the youngster, who was there as the guest of a member, had been to the Richfield Avenue casino. The youngster, who wants to remain anonymous, placed a bet at a poker table which was linked to other Stanley???s casinos nationally.

Casino general manager Jimmy Howard described the scene in the early hours of Tuesday last week as ???unbelievable???.

He said: ???The young man could not believe what had happened, it just didn???t sink in.

???He had to show his friend the cards first before he realised he had won the jackpot.???

The win generated a lot of excitement in the casino and gamblers who wanted to know how much he had won surrounded the table to congratulate him.

Mr Howard said the fresh-faced winner was totally shocked and had no idea what he was going to spend his winnings on.

The royal flush won him the progressive jackpot pool of ??183,978.15 generated by tables at 41 Stanley casinos across the country.

The game he played was Progressive Stud poker where each player is dealt five cards and to win the player has to have a better poker hand than the dealer.

As well as their initial stake, players can add ??1 to the progressive pot that accumulates nationally until someone wins it.

It???s not the first time lady luck has shone on gamblers at the Reading Sporting Club.

Lucky Damien Trinder, 26, from Oxford, scooped ??146,000 when he played Progressive Stud poker at the casino in January 2003.

The highest jackpot paid out so far was ??552,000 to a customer in Stanley???s Manchester casino.

Mr Howard said: ???It is by far the biggest win by a customer at this casino since I???ve been here. I am delighted for him, what a fantastic thing to happen at such a young age.

???I hope he enjoys every penny of his win.

???I really enjoy seeing people win big and it shows it is possible to win a fortune at our casino.???

The teenager, who lives in Oxford, picked up his winnings on Monday night but refused to speak to the Post as he left with his parents.
