Casino plan for car factory site - Tuesday 12th of July 2005

A casino, 1,000 new homes and units to attract jobs are to be built on the site of a former Vauxhall car factory.

Developers launched their scheme in Luton on Thursday and said borough council planners had held out for them to make allowance for new jobs.

Nearly 500,000 sq ft of office space, factory units and parking for the airport are now included.

Planning consultant David Lock said the council will have to take into account possible objections to the casino.

"Pressure from the council, and it was good and clear, is that they wanted the maximum number of high quality jobs on the car plant site," he said.

"One way we can do it is through the casino, if it is wanted, and we are very happy to defer to the councils decision."

The scheme will now go to Luton Borough Council for planning permission.
