Shootout Begins Outside Casino, Continues During Pursuit - Tuesday 12th of July 2005

Authorities said the pursuit began when the motorist attempted to force a woman off the freeway in Palm Springs. The pursuit extended to Casino Morongo and Cabazon.

The first shots were fired outside the casino.

"The suspect and the CHP officer returned fire," said a CHP spokesman. "From there, they got into a small pursuit."

The officer called for backup as the suspect fled west on surface streets toward the Morongo Indian Reservation. Authorities said the man continued to fire at the officer during the pursuit, shattering the squad cars windows.

Authorities said the suspect was struck by an officers bullet as the pursuit moved into Cabazon. The suspect was hospitalized.

He faces a charge of attempt to murder a peace officer.

The officer suffered injuries because of flying glass.
