SUPER-CASINO PLAN FOR RESORT
Torbay is expected to make a formal bid for a Monaco-style super-casino early next year. The Department of Culture Media and Sports casinos advisory panel has written to all local authorities asking them for a general expression of interest by December 31. Richard Morgan, chief executive of Torbay Development Agency, said: "We have already registered our general interest, but the council is going to have to take the final decision on whether we want one."
Fire in lintel
POLRUAN firefighters dealt with a lintel which had caught fire at a property in St Veep, near Lostwithiel. Two crews from Polruan, South East Cornwall, attended the house at around 10.20pm on Boxing Day.. Officers had to remove panelling to get to the fire, which was extinguished by 10.50pm.
Scooter blaze
A MOTOR scooter was severely damaged by fire in a suspected arson attack in Plymouth. Firefighters tackled the fire, in an alley between Laira Bridge and Embankment Road, just before 6pm on Boxing Day.
Band needs director
APPLEDORE Band is appealing for a new musical director. The brass band was founded more than 100 years ago and currently has more than 25 players, from children through to pensioners. A spokesman said: "We are a community band playing at fetes, carnivals and church events throughout the year, so if anyone is interested they should contact the band secretary on 01237 471106."
Bonfire extinguished
A BONFIRE that had burnt out of control was tackled by firefighters from Perranporth, near Newquay. One crew was alerted to Tywarnhayle Road, Perranporth, a 6.30pm on Boxing Day after reports that people were trying to extinguish a fire using a garden hose. The crew arrived to find an out of control bonfire.
Gift of tools
A SELECTION of tools, including specialist trowels and shovels have been given to Exmoor Conservation Volunteers by the CareMoor for Exmoor environmental support fund. Jessica Turner, Exmoor National Park Authoritys countryside archaeological adviser, said: "The archaeological volunteers carry out monitoring and conservation work on historically important sites across the National Park."
