Kansas Casino Plea Gets Cold Shoulder
TOPEKA, Kansas – As reported by the Wichita Eagle: "Park City Mayor Dee Stuart found a receptive audience Wednesday when she took her case for a Sedgwick County casino to the state Capitol.
"Unfortunately, she said, that audience was a busload of Wichita-area folks at the Emporia rest stop on the turnpike, headed to Harrah's Prairie Band Casino north of Topeka.
"Responding to some riders who recognized her, Stuart said, she boarded the bus, made a few remarks about her intentions and left to a round of applause.
"…The reception for Stuart and for two Sumner County officials, also seeking to be included in a casino bill, was not quite as warm at the Capitol.
"They were told they could not speak to the Wichita-Sedgwick County delegation of legislators at a noon luncheon, said Shelley Hansel, executive director of the Wellington Area Chamber of Commerce, who accompanied Debra Teufel, Sumner County economic development director.
"…As currently being drafted, the bill would authorize destination casinos in Kansas City and the Pittsburg area and slot machines at pari-mutuel tracks in Sedgwick, Wyandotte and Crawford counties…"
